Can’t be too upset about this one.

I mean, a guy with friends and family died doing his job, but that’s cool I guess.

If that’s the fish can’t we call this one a draw?

The guy was supposedly a pro. He shoulda known better. Sounds like he got too big for his britches and thought mother nature was his bitch. Lack of respect for the resources that keep him employed got him killed.

What was he thinking? That’s like jumping in front of a wild tiger. Except in the tiger situation, you’re at least on land.

Fisherman would have used the swordfish as a food source. The swordfish would have not used the fisherman as a food source.

This is not an edgy opinion.

I am a lifelong fisherman. I am well aware of how risky his job is/was. Spearfishing is terribly dangerous. I put it up there with base jumping in terms of risk, especially when dealing with fish that ALSO HAVE SPEARS.

Ah ok that justifies your opinion on the matter I guess. Go ahead and phone his friends telling them he was an idiot and it serves him right.

This is no different than my post from last week recounting how one bull gored three bullfighters in succession in Spain last year.
Humans who get it messing with large animals just don’t get a lot of sympathy from me. Sorry.

This is completely different. You have toreros performing and being gored or maimed as part of the sport. Being killed while fishing is not something that is expected. Using your logic Steve Irwin’s death wasn’t a great loss either. It’s not like the fisherman was doing some great injustice to fishes, or slowly killing them for spectators. He was fishing.

I didn’t say it was or wasn’t a great loss as I do not know the man. I can’t make that judgement. For all I know the dude could be a racist asshole who beats his kids. But as I said, I can’t get too upset about it. Just like I was not all upset about those two dudes who died base jumping in those flying suits a couple of weeks ago. If you catch a bad one doing something dangerous, how upset can a person who doesn’t know you personally get? It isn’t like a person dying of cancer or in an accident that was not their fault.

So fire fighters and cops and service men and women who die in the line of duty because they “catch a bad one doing something dangerous” don’t get your sympathy either? What about racer car drivers? Show some empathy, man.

If you equate cops and fireman and service men and women with a guy spearfishing...I just don’t know what to tell you.
Sympathy for race car drivers? Not really. I race bicycles. I have been 55mph on a bicycle with nothing but spandex between me and all kinds of bad things. I have told my wife and kids I am totally OK with dying on my bike. I assume car drivers feel the same way. Empathy for the people who are touched by their death...I guess. Sympathy for the person who died doing something knowingly dangerous. I just don’t have much man.
Ayrton said it best, “as long as it is quick.”

It’s just difficult to wrap my head around that thought process, but it’s not my job to do that so to each his own.

That is my point. Spearfishing for grouper or something like that...no prob.
But a SWORDFISH? Is the name not a hint? A swordfish can swim at 50mph in short bursts. And you are going to shoot one with a spear...while underwater and in close range? You are attached to a 50mph sabre...yeah, what could go wrong?

You are a callous asshole. The kid is Austin, Randy’s eight year old son. Now he gets to grow up without a dad, but hell, at least he know his dad got what was coming to him.

No, he will grow up knowing his dad died doing something he loved that was also very dangerous. Which again, I am totally cool with. But don’t expect me to be too upset about it. He knew the risks.
For real, I don’t race bicycles anymore. Know why? I got kids I need to support financially and emotionally. I can’t do that in a hospital or a coffin.
